Saying Yes to the Cranes
“The cranes are here”
When I received that message from my plein air group, I hesitated for only a moment. Having recently moved to Alabama, everything still felt new—the roads, the light, and the rhythms of life. I had never seen a crane in person, but growth rarely comes from staying comfortable. So, I packed my supplies and drove two hours toward the unknown.
The Sound Before the Sight
Before I saw them, I heard them. Their calls echoed across the refuge—bold, wild, and unapologetic. Standing there, I realized this was an invitation to step into unfamiliar territory. At the visitors center, I learned about the magnificent sandhill and whooping cranes—ancient, resilient creatures with wingspans stretching up to six feet.
The Unexpected Challenge
When I met with my fellow artists, I discovered I had forgotten my palette. After a two-hour drive, the frustration was sharp. However, challenges often sharpen focus. Instead of letting disappointment take over, I pulled out my sketchbook and slowed down. I observed the cranes’ adaptability in the cold and let my own limitations force a new kind of creativity.
The Painting That Emerged
When I developed the final piece, I wanted it to be more than a literal rendering; I wanted it to reflect the experience. The painting carries a sense of nostalgia, soft atmosphere, and quiet strength. It represents saying "yes" to new seasons and embracing mishaps as part of the creative journey. Stepping into the unknown expands us, and accepting that challenge made the work stronger.
This original painting, along with several other new pieces, is now available on my website. If you are in a season of embracing something new, I would love for one of these works to find a place in your home.
The cranes arrived that day, and with them came a reminder: growth often begins with a simple yes.
